It is fair to say that a couple of months I had never heard of the film by Isaac Florentine Undisputed 3: Redemption, and while I'm vaguely aware of the Wesley Snipes / Ving Rhames original, I'd probably skimmed past in this movie platform Both DVD without a second look. That was, however, before Action Fest. In the inaugural celebration of all things tick tick boom in Ashville, North Carolina Last month, Florentino was named Best Director, and Larnelle Stovall picked up the award for Best Fight Choreography. Suffice to say that, undisputed 3 fired from total darkness to the top of my list that have to do, and martial arts fans will not be disappointed - Undisputed 3 is a Jawbreaker!
As I said, never I saw the first Undisputed, or its sequel, so while the proclamation of this film that "Boyka is back!" was initially lost on me, is really matters not one iota. Uri Boyka (Scott Adkins) is a Russian fighter in the long run the prison, probably imprisoned for reasons explained in Undisputed 2 along with the origins of the bad knee injury that now relegated to scrub prison toilets. However, when he learns of a tournament between some of underground fighters best in the world of prison - with the prospect of freedom as the prize hanging by the Mafia to organize the event - called Boyka ensures operator in Russia, and duly sent the secret location.
Soon Boyka is living in even worse condition than before, forced to monotonous hours of manual labor by the prison director and seeded fascist ruthless against fighters from around the world, including U.S. Turbo (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) and Columbia junkie "guy bad, "Pain (Marko Zaror). As money riding on these guys and lots of blood and sweat rains down on the canvas, finds himself Boyka making alliances and rivalries threatening cautious as he fights not only for freedom, but also for his life!
Undisputed 3 is a good candidate as any to become in the perfect Saturday night beer and pizza movie. There is little in the way of probing back-story or the nuanced character development, which do not even have throw away a romance - unless you count the grudging respect that is built between Boyka and Turbo. This is a film about huge, ripped guys beating the shit each other for 95 minutes - and arguably more sophisticated features of the year, and choreographed and expertly filmed battle scenes to hammer nails.
Isaac Florentine has the wrong idea about the kind of film you are doing and what your audience is paying to see and as a result whips through drama and sequences of exposure as quickly and as economically as possible to reach the next beat down before attentions begin to decrease. And when he gets there, Florentino toward really dazzles. Each fight is filmed with long shots right-handed, almost acrobatic, cameras that duck and weave around the ring, almost as quickly as fighters, listened loop or hanging from the ropes to catch Adkins, Zaror, Jenkins or whoever, and to throw their bodies into the air, before handing hammer blows to each other. The pace is fast and exciting, and although coverage includes a good amount of above and below the boot, in this context, very useful to rate the fighting, and helps the editor to resist the urge to cut every second, so the action is allowed to flow and combinations can talk themselves.
The film also benefits from the fact that their action stars are also very charismatic group of actors to boot. Scott Adkins is a friendly and confident lover surprising that even the weight of a thick Russian accent and dialogue rarely rises above the mundane. In the ring of acrobatics and athletics often leave your jaw hanging open, even as destroy their opponents, but the drama that handles surprisingly well too. However, even Adkins is overshadowed by the imposing presence of Chile Marko Zaror revelation. Shrinkage readers must now be all-too-familiar with the Star of Kiltro and Chuck, here proves to be an adversary more than capable to Adkins. Its graceful footed swagger is sure to become his trademark, betrays his size while dancing around the ring, and although his character is not given too deeply, Zaror has an attractive natural screen quality that is hard to ignore.
Now I've never been good in the name of accuracy or control different martial arts fighting styles, but I know what I like and indisputable three stands literally at the seams with fun innovative and technically innovative battles. The stars are given ample time to shine, while the film is never heavy guest. As someone who normally requires real drama of real people with their martial arts, I was overwhelmed, overwhelmed and left battered and bleeding to total mercy of this film.
