martial art biographies
what is Chinese insult?

what is the derogatory chinese term for a white person. i was watching a auto-biography movie about bruce lee and lee was teaching people of all colors martial arts and another chinese man mentioned the term pronounced (why-low). what is the correct spelling and meaning?

The Chinese characters are 鬼佬 (gui3 lao3) meaning ghostly or devilish fella.
This could be derived from another phrase 红毛鬼 (hong2 mao2 gui3), which in turns mean Red Haired Devil. This could be attributed to the fact that Europeans are much paler as compared to the Chinese, and that Red hair are not found in Asians at all.
Either way, in the movie you watched, I think it is in Cantonese, whereby the phrase is pronounced as "Guai Lo"
