Freedom

In the land where "the sun always shines, the celestial world had not shone its bright face for many days. I was the city during a torrential downpour. I had not seen any golden rays, warming. In fact, three weeks had passed since I went to Los Angeles from I graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It had been pouring ever since. I left the Midwest to escape the cold, bleak days of rain, snow and clouds. This evening was especially ominous with pelting sheaths of humidity and wind. Certainly was not the night to venture outside my rented room where he had been holed up since my arrival! But my inner guide insisted I take a walk wet, and sad to nowhere.

Spirit was telling me that I had to leave, to break free of the claustrophobic walls, gray in my cramped matchbox of a room. I do not want to go! The dismal weather gave me a good reason socially acceptable to stay in the shelter of my because it was cold and wet outside. However, fear was the real reason was to avoid leaving my room and explore my new city. Venturing outside would mean taking the next ominous step in my spiritual odyssey.

All day my inner coach was incessantly urging me to get out in the flow of the river of life, so I could hit my target. Spirit did not buy my lame excuse of bad weather. For the real me, take a walk during the flood Tropical was an excellent opportunity to experience life as a river, to allow the natural pulse and rhythm of life to pump some vitality back into my reluctant psyche. My personality argued nothing of importance could happen to me in a night so harsh and inhospitable. No person in their right mind would be on foot. There would be a meeting with! But my inner guide will not be swayed from its purpose. I leave my isolated room.

I learned to follow my instincts when action is needed so strong as it was that night. Reluctantly, I dressed myself against the torrential wind and left my safe haven for an unknown adventure in the city "of Los Angeles. "I had driven across the country to start over. The bad weather delayed my plans and dampened my hopes, but was still open to find some kind of messenger of God, angels or otherwise. I went for my wet adventure, thinking to myself, maybe my inner coach knows something about the city of that name still we have not discovered.

Or maybe not! After a quick walk a dozen blocks of a deserted city chilling rain, I was soaked to the bone and ready to withdraw from what was quickly becoming a failed trip. I turned and began the journey back to my apartment when a light shining in the gutter caught my attention. The beam seemed to be shining through a soggy, mud-covered steering wheel on the side of the street. Naturally, I stopped to examine the phenomenon more closely. Yes, definitely had a light shining through the paper. My curiosity peaked; I stooped to pick the leaf. As soon as I touched the flyer, the mysterious luminescence behind it faded.

Not only am I soaked and miserable, I'm starting to see things, I guess I am. Enough Already! This crazy junket has come to an end. I'm going back to my room warm and inviting.

I wiped the worst of the dirt leaf, put it in the pocket of my jacket and went to his house to a rapid pace. I had a souvenir of my soggy journey. At least I would not go empty handed!

Back in the cozy refuge of my room dry toast, I carefully smoothed the rain-swollen sheet of paper. I was very curious what the strange light caught my attention. The ad fades a public invitation to a meal made at home of natural foods. Hungry for food from a source other than a can I was thrilled at the prospect of a homemade feast and some human companionship. And the cost was only five dollars! Little did I know at the time I had taken the bait laid by my soul on that gusty, damp night.

The next Thursday night, I enjoyed a sumptuous meal of creamy leek soup, organic brown rice, garden fresh vegetables and something green called nori seaweed at the East-West Institute of Los Angeles. The Institute was a macrobiotic school and retreat of the international community healer and teacher Michio Kushi, founder of the center and our host for the evening.

With a full stomach and my mind and body relaxed, I was fully prepared for my inner coach is outrageous. Mr. Kushi asked the diners if there was a professional gardener in the table. My hand shot on your own!
What kind of adventure was getting into my mind this time? I sighed to myself. I do not like working in the garden! I have never planted a garden. I do not know the difference between a daffodil and a tulip. The only "landscaping" I've done was cutting the grass in our garden when I was a child. And avoid as far as possible. In addition, I have lived all my life in a cold climate in the north. I am totally ignorant of the subtropical foliage of Southern California. And I do not care to learn!

"We several landscaped acres, including fruit trees and flowers, herbs and vegetables. Would you like to take over the maintenance functions of the extensive grounds of the estate? "Asked Mr. Kushi. I could not believe my mouth said," Yes. "

This outrageous phenomenon was not entirely new to me. I have been my spirit's pawn before when my inner coach usurped control of my speech and answered a question for me. I had a gut feeling my real self was about take me for the ride of my young life. Events soon validated this premonition. My new job set my personal path on an interception course with my first mentor life extraordinary: Michio Kushi.

Japanese to the core, Michio was an enigmatic, seductive, modern Samurai. In forty years when we met, Michio face was soft and supple as a baby, your happy and safe riding. Though most often charming and charismatic, he could be fierce and demanding, especially with his students, as yo!

Michio's domain was the Institute and the extensive grounds surrounding it. In the vibrant, romantic heyday of Hollywood, the magnificent estate had once been the home of Al Jolson and jazz lover, the movie star Ruby Keeler. This farm was a forty-room Spanish villa meanders with picturesque French doors lead to numerous patios and balconies with views of the metropolis in the valley below. Avocado, banana, lemon, lime, grapefruit and orange trees, a rose garden, a vine and a reflecting pool graced the hillside area. Antelope and deer frolicked through the pine forest in the surrounding acres. gatehouse of the estate was larger that most people home.

It caught my attention and respect Michio successfully sculpting the property in a neat, trim and healthy Shangri-La. No, I do not take an unknown gardening genius hidden within me. I found that those in charge of Greek and Italian countryside for Hollywood stars met early every morning coffee at the nearby Sunset Boulevard. From these generous Old World gardeners, I learned how to care for my new horticultural charges. In his wisdom earth had been ignored and despised by his own sons, these talented landscapers were overjoyed to help a young person interested in his wide knowledge care of plants. In short, I was an expert in the mowing and caring for bougainvillea bushes, carob trees, and every other common and exotic tropical plant.

Michio became a great friend and mentor over the next ten years of my life. He helped me understand and integrate my first spiritual initiation in Montreal. Through him I learned to see the world with a new perspective, one that was whole, vital and fresh. Soon I was promoted to director of the Institute, the person coordinated all the various activities of the center. In addition to addressing the grounds and gardens, I supervised the staff that provide classes, meals and sleeping accommodation. In installations in Los Angeles and around the world, Michio presented a fusion of Eastern and Western philosophy, psychology and practice that acupuncture applied mixed martial arts and macrobiotic, natural foods with pragmatic life coaching and community life.

This humble, yet very erudite healer had led a turbulent life professional. Considered a radical influence, Michio was forced in the sixties by the American Medical Association to abandon physically two of the most liberal communities in the country: Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Manhattan, New York. Ironically, it was out of town for espousing the same philosophy of health who now teaches at the most prestigious institutions in those same cities: Harvard and Columbia University Medical Schools. The medical establishment and the general public currently accept and endorse what Michio exposed in the sixties! In the decades following its simple principles, members of the harmonious development nourishing living have helped thousands of people around the world.

Despite long days of private counseling and lengthy evening lectures to hundreds of students, Michio always had time to meet with me and share their skills. The most valuable lessons he absorbed from him were not so much what I have gathered in the classroom, although it took copious notes on his talks about everything under the sun in the realm of healing, cosmology and spiritual disciplines. Wisdom is not Price wise I treated this poor was in a more subtle and profound. Michio presented his spiritual savior faire to me in a way that was no verbal or conceptual. He shared his world of wisdom in an existential, experiential, through everyday actions and events. He was outwardly casual about his involvement, however internally the way was very premeditated and deliberate. This was the knowledge that meant the most to me. They never discussed the life lessons he taught me. Simply absorbed to be near him.

In Los Angeles and later in Boston, Michio and often ran away together after his lectures to quiet cafes, away from France where his fanatical disciples would never think to look. These colorful bars serve all meals Michio warned that in his lectures, which focused primarily on how various foods affected their health and spirituality. In his talks, he advised eating a main diet of whole grains, natural resources, fruits and vegetables. He spoke adamantly about avoiding alcohol, drugs, coffee, sugar, dairy, animal fats, red meat, white flour, white rice chemicalized of all processed foods.

However, these frequent outings, Michio ordered French butter croissants, eclairs and every available pleasure more sugar. Traditionally, the Japanese love to eat and talk about food. He was always very intrigued about whether a special pasta made with orange or lemon peel, or if it contained a touch of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg or clove. In a similar way to a ritual of Zen tea ceremony, cut each cake in half carefully. Eating each piece slowly and delicately, we discussed what ingredients were used in the development of flavors and textures of the desserts, cleansing our palates between every bite with a sip of strong coffee, sweetened.

On other nights, we went to Italian restaurants in Los Angeles and Boston. The consumption of large meals of white flour pasta with tomato sauce meatballs, we sip red wine and enjoy sweet dessert cannoli, all food at all, "Never Eat" list from Michio's lectures on macrobiotic philosophy.

Michio and I dined out these years. We never talked to anyone about our excursions. And we have never discussed between ourselves the seeming discrepancies between his words and actions, between his recommended diet and savored its delights. However, in their own forms of experience, paradoxically, was giving me life lessons I had to learn: the importance of enjoying food and celebrating life with enthusiasm, flexibility, intuition and, above all, freedom.

When we sat down eating pastries, Michio leaned toward me and speak with great earnestness, "Keit, you must be free of man." Very gently, he always pronounced "th" as a "t" in my name.

"You should be free to do whatever you want. You should be free to eat whatever you want. You must have the freedom to be whatever you want. "

Michio words felt good to me. At that time, I had no conceptual sense of what was passing, but to be in spirit and energy of what was shared. Now I know that in his presence, I was absorbing his vibration of being free and living intuitively.

Michio I talked about being "sovereign." Implored me never "work for money. Never do something you do not want to do to get money. If you work for money, are not better than a slave! "

His words were strong and penetrating effect on me because I knew in my heart it was true. However, I did not no idea how to live this truth in my life. At that time, I could not imagine how a person can take money without working in a job. Since then, I learned to draw the financial support of the universe by aligning my professional path with my soul passion and purpose.

Michio emphasized the joy of be a free individual. He taught that all are equally able to be free, intuitive and creative. He had moved near me, talking right into my ear soul, "You should be free to do whatever you want. And you must be strong enough to do only what you do in life."

Words My mentor was very enriching for me and prophetic. I felt sublime love from him when he said: "You must, you will, go far beyond me. You to leave behind. I teach what I do now, but will teach something much bigger and yet much simpler. "His words were foreshadowing The Dream Workshops would be easier than twenty years. He prophesied: "You will attract many people. They will come to learn something that is purer, more basic and even more powerful than I teach now. "

Michio conferences focused on the exhaustive presentation of information, principles and laws universal about the best ways to eat and live. I asked why not emphasize the primacy of intuition in his lectures to the extent it did in our debates cafeteria.

"Oh, but I do," he replied. "But not many people listen. At the end of all my conversations, I always say that to be happy and healthy, you must live intuitively. But few hear me. "

Incredulous upon hearing his words, I began to investigate the enigma. I started paying care at the end of his public seminars. Indeed, Michio spoke of intuitive eating more healthy way of eating and intuitive living is the most joyous of life: "The most creative and effective life is to make all decisions in the life of the internal consulting know. Pure, clear intuition priority over all rules, concepts, principles and philosophy. "He did accentuate the supremacy of intuition at the end of each talk. However, I was unaware that he said end until he brought it to my attention. I reviewed the notes from my friends. None of the students had recorded Michio's views on the importance of intuition. I asked if they had ever heard him utter these ideas. There was. In fact, my friends were very dubious. They do believe the macrobiotic leader never spoke of intuitive eating or living! Even trained some of my friends where listening to the concept at the end of his lectures. Have not heard. Obviously it was not his time to hear this message.

When we sat together late at night, I often ask Michio why he was wasting his time with me. I thought just a hair over a snail in terms of my awareness. He always answered very simply: "Because you listen. Because you hear. And because you we will put in a day. "We certainly knew something I did not realize at the time!

Often Michio touched me poignantly with his compassion. A night over pastries and cappuccino, he said, "Keit, you are very scared right now because of all the changes you are going through."

He was right. At his side, he was witnessing spontaneous healings, physical and spiritual progress almost daily. I was also experiencing miracles in my own issues. My life was becoming very magical. The limits of my little world is continually expanding, including the psychological borders that comfortably defined who I thought it was me, and intellectual boundaries of what possible reasons in accordance with the laws of physics and science.

He continued in a very intimate, "A Sometimes there is a great anxiety. But, you know, I'm so afraid to take my next step in my journey as they take the next step in your journey. We are together in our fear. We're twins terror! "

Then he laughed and laughed as he offered me another sweet tart to celebrate our union in fear.

What Michio offered me in all our encounters was very difficult for me to accept emotionally at the time. He handed me not only loving friendship, but also equal respect-something that was not yet psychologically capable of receiving. Was inviting me to experience myself as his equal, to play and interact with him as an equal. This perspective was far beyond my own image of my worth and substance. However, the vibration of peership snuck past my mental and emotional defenses. Michio did successfully plant the seed of equality deep within my being.

I will never forget how touched my heart to hear him proclaim have in common in relation to the fear of change. In that statement one, bridged false separation I felt between us and between me and all other people. He put me in touch with the truth of the common bond I share with all humanity on this decidedly exciting and terrifying human journey on Earth. I was preparing to anchor my Dream Workshops as a meeting "of equals".
